How Low Can you go? The Challenges of Deep Mining

Mponeng, owned by Harmony Gold Mining, has a reserve of 1.9 Moz at 7.25 g/t, with a further 24.3 Moz of resources. Remaining mine life is 7 years, at which point the mine will extend to ~4200 m. The challenges and costs of such mining are formidable. The shaft is so deep that different lifts have to be used to descend in stages.

The Australian Gold Rush (1851): Triggered by the discovery in New South Wales, this rush saw advancements like deep shaft mining to access gold veins underground. It also led to the development of more complex ore-processing techniques, including the use of sophisticated equipment to handle larger volumes of earth and rock.

Deep Shafts | SpringerLink

Very deep shafts have traditionally been associated with the gold mining industry in South Africa, where depths of 6,000 to 8,000 ft are common. In good, hard rock with dry conditions, shafts with circular concrete linings of 25 to 30 ft internal diameter have been conventionally sunk and lined at rates of up to 1,250 ft in a month (e.g ...

Deep mining

Mining is vertical; and it is deep. Deep can sometimes be very deep. A standard mine typically extracts from between 500m and 2,000m below the surface. Anything deeper than that is reckoned deep shaft mining. The global record is held by a mine in South Africa that is extracting from around 3,500m.
