Basic End Mills Technical Information

Ball end mills, also known as ball nose end mills, are used for milling contoured surfaces, slotting and pocketing. A ball end mill is constructed of a round cutting edge and used in the machining of dies and molds. Roughing end mills, also known as hog mills, are used to quickly remove large amounts of material during heavier operations.

Tips on milling brass

Re: Tips on milling brass. by knudsen » Wed Apr 14, 2010 6:34 pm. No cutting fluid, coolant or oil, go dry. It does tend to grab cutters, which means you want the piece secured very well and no excessive slop in any axis of the mill. I have little milling experience on brass, but considerable turning experience.

How to Mill Brass

For milling brass, the best tools are high-speed steel (HSS) cutters specifically designed for cutting metals. The type of HSS cutter will depend on the size and shape of your workpiece – a ball-end cutter is great for sculpting, while an end mill is better suited to cutting precise shapes with flat surfaces. A drill bit may also come in ...

Best for slotting in steel? Four flute, 2 flute?

Since I take it your not plunge cutting, I would go with the 4 flute type. You did not mention if the end-mills are carbide or steel. I mill a lot of 1/2 inch deep 3/8 wide slots in 1018 steel and I just use air blow and no oil. The 4 fluters last a long time while 2 fluters snap once they get a little dull.

Depth of Cut (Milling)

The Axia depth of cut is also called Stepdown and Cut depth. It is designated by ap or ADOC. The maximum possible depth depends mainly on the cutter's diameter. For large diameter cutters (Above 3/4″, 20 mm), It is up to 4D (4 times the diameter). For small diameter cutters (Below 1/8″, 3 mm) it is up to 10D.

end mills for plunging?

Alternatively this might work if you have a rotary table, pilot to depth say a 3/4" hole, change for a 3/4" endmill, offset the table 1/8" on one axis, plunge to depth and rotate the table 360 deg which should give you a 1" flat bottom hole with square corners. Cutting Thin Slots | The Hobby-Machinist

I was wondering what the best machine and setup would be to cut a thin slot, .020", about 1/4" to 3/8" deep, into brass bar, maybe 10"-14" in length. I was thinking a slot saw blade or a micro drill bit. Would a horizontal mill or vertical mill be better? From what I have gathered it seems like a vertical mill is more versatile.

Why Use a Single Flute End Mill?

At a given surface speed, a 4 flute end mill can take 4 cuts at a given chip load (chip thickness) while a 2 flute end mill only takes half as many. So the 4 flute end mill might have 2x the Material Removal Rate. This is why we see cutters with many flutes become popular in challenging materials that only allow fairly slow surface speeds.

Milling Cutters Explained | An Expert Guide Cutwel Ltd

A 2-flute geometry allows for greater chip evacuation which is best suited for cutting slots without flute clogging. Slot drills will have 1 flute that is to the centre (centre-cutting), allowing the slot drill to plunge (cut down). It may be beneficial to open a slot with a slot drill then use a 3-4 flute end mill to make the process faster.

Best way to cut a keyway

One is cut with an end mill, and terminates with a 90 degree wall at the inner end. The other style is cut with a keyway cutter, which is essentially a small circular saw the width of the keyway, and leaves a dished inner end. The end mill style would seem to leave a stress concentration point at the 90 degree termination. The dished style is ...
